Finite Element Modelling of Human Knee Joint
This project focuses on developing a patient-specific finite element model of the human knee joint, capturing the detailed behaviour of soft tissues including cartilage, menisci, and ligaments. The model accounts for complex loading scenarios and runs efficiently in under 30 minutes. To support this, George Smith and Sam Vanns designed and built a custom 6-degree-of-freedom mechanical rig to test meniscus horn failure. Their work led to an innovative anchoring technique, enabling the testing of both native and re-anchored menisci under tension and torsion, and providing valuable data on failure loads.
